'Angpow packets' found stashed in Setapak police station

KUALA LUMPUR: The Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) is conducting an internal investigation on a policeman, who allegedly stowed away angpow packets and a significant amount of cash at the Setapak police station.

JIPS director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the case has been forwarded to Bukit Aman and it would open a disciplinary enquiry paper over the policeman, who was found in possession of the money and angpow packets during the inspection.

He said they are investigating the source of money and establishing whether there was any misconduct that occurred.

Azri, however did not disclose the amount of money that the JIPS enforcement officers found.

"In this case, I confirm there was a compliance spotcheck that we conducted randomly and JIPS had found some angpows.. We are conducting further investigations on the source of the money.

"When we find money, we have to ask further if it is indeed their money. The red angpows are also a 'question mark', so we have to ask if he was given the angpow, who gave it to him and establish if there is any misconduct.

"By right, he cannot be in possession of angpows so he has to answer to internal queries," Azri told the New Straits Times.

He said as the money was found in the policeman's locker, and further investigations were needed to establish if there had been misconduct.

"Usually for external operations such as roadblocks, there are standard operating procedures in which they can only bring RM100 during their operations; and they have to declare it if they are bringing more. But in this case, the money was found in his locker.

"So we will inquire further."

Azri said the spotcheck is a routine for JIPS officers as they have conducted over 500,000 inspections last year as part of steps to strengthen the integrity of the force.

A whistleblower site had earlier today reported about JIPS operations that led to the discovery of RM4,239 in cash and the angpows, which were kept in in a sling bag in a policeman's locker.

The team also found RM2,050 in angpows that was in the policeman's small bag that was attached to his right hip.

It was also alleged that the police had opened an investigation paper to probe into the matter.
