LANGKAWI: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has seized 1,325 motorcycles nationwide in the Special Operation on Motorcycles (Op Khas) between Feb 1 and Feb 7.

RTD enforcement senior director Datuk Lokman Jamaan said all the seized motorcycleshad flouted the safety standards for roadworthiness.

He said during the period a total of 97, 366 motorcycles were inspected and 25,967 notices issued for various offences with 6,001 or 27 per cent of the cases were for failing to comply with the road safety regulations.

"The other 8,358 or 32 per cent of cases involved those riding without a license, 5,655 (22 per cent) for not having road tax, and 5,058 (19 per cent) of cases riding without insurance protection.

"The remaining 365 cases involved those beating the red light and 530 cases of failing to wear a helmet while riding," he told reporters after inspecting the "Op Khas" at Jalan Kelibang here yesterday evening.

Present was Langkawi RTD branch chief Iskandar Zulkarnain Mohamad Ali.

Lokman added that operation was carried out at traffic lights, roadblocks, and snap checks.

"We wish to remind motorcycle riders to change their attitude by not beating the red light, being reckless in entering and exiting junctions, illegal racing, beating the speed limit, and sudden braking.

"Besides those, close tailgating, making illegal U-turns, crossing and riding against the traffic flow as well as several other offences have also contributed to fatal accident cases," he said.
