21 motorcycles seized in Ops Samseng Jalanan

BALIK PULAU: Twenty-one motorcycles were seized in Ops Samseng Jalanan conducted in Penang Southwest District early this morning.

According to a statement from the Southwest District police headquarters, all the motorcycles were seized under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 in an integrated operation from 11.30pm until 4am today.

"During the operation, the police also issued 54 summonses for various traffic offences including not having driver's licence, not having road tax, no side mirrors and excessive modifications," read the statement.

Besides curbing street thugs involving mat rempit gangs, the operation also aims to ensure that motorcyclists comply with existing traffic rules and that their vehicles comply with the stipulated specifications.

"The operation is also focused at locations that are popular with mat rempit carrying out dangerous stunts and illegal racing as well as detecting drunk drivers, preventing cases of vehicle theft, looting, burglary and other crimes," said the statement.

In another development, the Penang Road Transport Department seized a total of 37 motorcycles and a private car driven by foreigners without ownership grants in the Foreign Motorcycle and Driver Ops (PeWA) in Juru and Bukit Mertajam yesterday. --BERNAMA
