MACC: Some enforcement officers at Kelantan-Thailand border under watch

KOTA BARU: Several enforcement officers manning the Kelantan-Thailand border are under close watch by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged involvement in corruption.

State MACC director Rosli Husain, however, refused to disclose their identities.

"I can confirm that we have received complaints from the public on enforcement officers allegedly involved in wrongdoing and are monitoring them closely.

"But we also are facing a little bit of a problem in nabbing them as 'third parties' in the case refuse to come forward to assist us.

"They do not want to give their cooperation due to several reasons," he said, without elaborating.

Rosli said the number of border enforcement officers involved, however, was not alarming

He said he believed the awareness campaign against corruption had contributed to the small number of enforcement officers involved in corruption.

"The anti-corruption programmes which were jointly organised between Malaysia and Thailand have helped both countries in combating corruption among border security agencies," he said.

On another note, Rosli said 16 people were detained by the state MACC for accepting and offering bribes throughout last year.

He said these included 13 civil servants.

"Out of the 16, 11 have already been charged in courts," he added.s
