CNY holiday period sees over six million vehicles on major highways

KUALA LUMPUR: The Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (TEID) has recorded over 6 million vehicles using major highways throughout the country during the Chinese New Year holiday period.

Its chief, Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said of the total, movements of 5.78 million vehicles were reported using the North-South Expressway with an average of 1.92 million vehicles at any given time.

He said the movement of more than 800,000 vehicles were reported using the East Coast-bound Karak Highway with an average of 295,369 vehicles.

"We anticipate an increase in vehicles throughout the Op Selamat 21 period due to the long holiday season, especially involving movements between districts and states.

"Road users took the opportunity to visit relatives and tourist destinations. This situation involves movement through highways, federal roads, state roads, and urban areas," he said.

He also said a total of 4,764 accident cases involving 5,891 vehicles were recorded nationwide over the three days of Op Selamat 21 during the Chinese New Year period, starting from Thursday until yesterday.

"Out of that total, 44 fatal accident cases were recorded with 46 deaths.

"Of the total deaths, 32 individuals or 69 per cent involved motorcyclists and pillion riders," he said in a statement today.

Therefore, Mohd Azman advised all road users, especially motorcyclists, to cooperate, be courteous, and cautious, and to focus on driving.

He added that the use of the My-TTA Plus application can also help road users plan their journeys and take short breaks when fatigued in traffic congestion.

He said, stern action will be taken against individuals who commit traffic offenses contributing to road accidents.
