Tourists in Langkawi unperturbed by warm spell

LANGKAWI: Tourists seem unperturbed by the warm weather as many continue enjoying outdoor activities on the popular island here despite the current hot spell.

Many tourists who have been flocking to the island have not been put off by the temperature being at 37 degrees Celsius over the past three days.

Instead, travellers take advantage of the clear blue skies to enjoy their time visiting tourism hotspots with their families.

Checks at the Kuah Ferry jetty terminal showed hundreds of tourists and domestic travellers queueing up to board the tour boats for island-hopping activities since early morning.

For the island-hopping package, travellers take a boat ride to visit three popular islands, namely Pulau Dayang Bunting, Pulau Singa Besar and Pulau Beras Basah, which takes between three and four hours.

A tourist Jiang Tingrun, 42, from Chengdu, China, said the dry weather did not deter him, his wife Li Zhiheng, 39, and their two children from touring the island.

"For as long as it doesn't compromise our health, I don't see any problem for our family to carry out outdoor activities during our three-day holiday here.

"However, we make sure to consume a lot of water to avoid being dehydrated," he said when met at the jetty terminal.

Meanwhile, resident Abdul Ghani Abdullah, 33, said he too makes sure that he takes extra water to stay hydrated.

The tour boat skipper said for now, he could still deal with the heat as he has gotten used to it.

"The most important thing is to drink a lot of water as that helps," said Ghani, from Kampung Penarak here.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) listed Langkawi as one of the four spots in the peninsula on Level 1 (Caution) after recording high temperatures of between 35 and 37 degrees Celcius over the past three days.

The other three locations that were listed were Pokok Sena in Kedah mainland; Seberang Prai Utara and Seberang Prai Tengah in Penang mainland.

The northern region is experiencing a prolonged dry spell due to the El Nino phenomenon.
