Use water wisely during dry spell, Langkawi folk urged

LANGKAWI: Nine locations, including tourist hotspots, on the island are facing water supply disruptions due to the El Nino phenomenon.

In a statement today, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) Sdn Bhd said the affected areas were Kuah town, Kisap, Kilim, Perana, Bayas, Ulu Melaka, Temoyong, Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah.

Sada said the country, particularly the northern part of the peninsula, was experiencing an extended dry spell due to the El Nino phenomenon.

"The water level in Sungai Melaka, Langkawi is depleting, making it hard for Sada to meet the demand for treated water.

"The demand for treated water is on the rise, in anticipation of the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays and the new school term," it said.

Sada said the production capacity of all water treatment plants (WTPs) in Langkawi was declining and this was expected to continue until Sungai Melaka returned to normal.

"The situation is further aggravated by leaks in underwater pipes that supply treated water to Langkawi from the Sungai Baru WTP in Perlis.

"We advise Langkawi residents to use water wisely during this dry spell to ensure uninterrupted water supply," it said.
