Sarawak's 'Kilat Boy' looks to cause upset in Bangladesh, eyes WBC Asia qualification

KUCHING: Sarawakian professional boxer Dealoniel Mcdelon Bong, known as 'Kilat Boy', is undeterred by the disadvantage of competing on foreign soil as he gears up to face his Bangladeshi opponent, Resatul Mahmud Sajin, this Saturday at the Kemal Ataturk Park in Banani, Dhaka, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Both fighters, while carving out names for themselves, are set for a showdown in the featherweight (57.2kg) category, in a bout that holds significant stakes for the Sarawakian pugilist. A victory for 25-year-old Dealoniel will prove crucial for his chances of participating in the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Championship slated for April in Singapore.

Speaking at the Kuching International Airport (LTAK) before his departure to Dhaka on Tuesday, Dealoniel expressed his resolve despite the odds.

"I have been preparing intensively since December, even sacrificing family celebrations to focus on this match. Winning is vital to enhance my ranking in Asia and qualify me for the WBC Asia title," he said.

A triumph in Dhaka would add another star to his record, edging him closer to the coveted WBC Asia fight. Dealoniel currently holds two stars from previous victories, including making history as the main belt winner at the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Championship in Thailand on October 26, 2023.

Sarawak State Boxing Association (SABA) president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo voiced confidence in 'Kilat Boy's' ability to replicate his stellar performance and clinch the upcoming match. He praised the young boxer's commitment to his training and relentless effort to improve with every fight.

"Our hope is that he can secure a win over his opponent. May his success serve as an inspiration to other young boxers, particularly those preparing for the upcoming Sukma," Rahman said.
