Fahmi: Govt to look into easy system for complaints about content theft

KUALA LUMPUR: Content creators may soon be able to easily lodge complaints should anyone reproduce their work without credit.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government would look into introducing such a system so that content creators can be protected.

This, he said, includes portals and blogs who may lift such content without permission.

Fahmi acknowledged that some content, including news excerpts, taken without permission could be interpreted out of context, which may lead to fake news.

He said the government would look into the matter to better protect the rights of content owners.

"It is not only that e-commerce is affected by people taking their content, but news portals as well, where most of the time people have taken their content without permission and lead to the news being taken out of context.

"We can develop a basic system where the content or news owner can lodge a complain and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for example (as a regulator), could take action against (the perpetrators).

"We have yet to have that system but it could be developed. It would be a basic and simple system so that we can protect the ownership or copyright of the content owner," he told reporters after launching the Maxis 5G-Advanced Trial Showcase.

Fahmi was responding to questions on whether the government would take action against small portals who are "stealing" content from others.
