'Delete and don't spread video of Semenyih assault' - MCMC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has asked the public not to share videos of the assault on a car driver who died as a result, following a road accident in Taman Pelangi, Semenyih 2 recently.

In a statement today, the MCMC said it sympathises with the victim's family and asked the public to be sensitive of the situation.

They ask for those who have already shared it, to promptly delete.

"The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) expresses sympathy with the tragic incident that occurred in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2, Kajang recently. The video depicts violence against a man involved in an accident.

"Out of respect for the victim's family, the MCMC urges the public not to spread the video and if already uploaded; we advise the public to delete it.

The statement further read that sharing recordings of the victim's video not only hurt the feelings of the victim's family but also violate basic principles and ethics regarding the use of graphic material related to accidents, incidents, and violence that may cause distress to viewers.

It also encouraged people to refer to the commission's Content Code as a guideline for public content sharing.

"As a guideline regarding content creation, reference can be made to the Content Code of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

"Every individual should consider refraining from spreading videos or content related to the incident. Any sharing involving videos or content involving victims and parties involved may be subject to legal action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," it warned.

Video of the assault on a car driver alleged to be involved in a hit-and-run went viral, following which 5 suspects were arrested.

Before the arrest, a video clip with a message was seen circulating on social media, alleging that the deceased had crashed into a delivery rider and refused to stop.

The message read that the two were involved in a crash at a traffic stop in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2, and some motorcyclists who noticed the man not stopping after the crash gave chase towards Oakberry, Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2.
