Sabah dams can meet water needs till June with current hot spell

KOTA KINABALU: Dams in Sabah can meet water needs for only three more months if the hot weather persists.

Sabah Public Works Minister, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said that he recently met the State Water Department to discuss the water supply situation.

The State Meteorological Department has forecast that the hot spell would continue until June.

"We are currently implementing water rationing due to distribution system issues.

"However, if the situation worsens, we may need to enforce additional rationing and urge the public to be cautious with their water usage.

"Alternatively, the relevant agency will also consider cloud seeding," he told the media after launching the state-level World Scout Founder's Day celebration at BP House, Sembulan here.

Also present was Sabah Malaysia Scouts Association Chief Commissioner, Jamaludin @ Jamal Jinal.

Meanwhile, Shahelmey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister and Tanjung Keramat assemblyman, emphasised that scouting was synonymous with youth development.

"It fosters volunteerism, leadership, and community service among young people."

The two-day event will gather all members from throughout the state at BP House.

During the celebration, scouts will take part in traditional games, and other initiatives such as Sabah Scout Digital.
