'Establish task force to study all current and potential AI-related issues'

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to establish a task force to study all current and potential issues related to artificial intelligence (AI).

Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) said the committee should span across ministries and involve experts and stakeholders.

He said OpenAI recently introduced the generative AI 'Sora', which is capable of producing high-resolution videos that look realistic.

"Soon, we may not be able to distinguish between the real ones and AI-generated videos.

"While we cannot deny that AI has transformed our lives and has many benefits, at the same time we cannot discount the arising issues," he said when debating the royal address in Dewan Rakyat today.

Among the issues, said Syahredzan, were those related to intellectual property; misinformation and disinformation; and, the impact on those in the creative industry.

"The intellectual property issues, with AI, some content may resemble someone else's intellectual property.

"However, under the copyright law, if there is no imitation or copying, it is not a copyright infringement.

"Therefore, we need to review our existing intellectual property laws to address new intellectual property issues with the existence of AI," he said.

On misinformation and disinformation issues, Syahredzan said: "Imagine if anyone could create fake videos or images to attack the others using AI.

"The existing laws should be able to address this possibility, especially the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act.

"On the impact on those in the creative industry, what will be their fate with AI?

"If a graphic was previously created by humans, with AI, we only need to put the input of what we want and the video or image would be created by AI.

"I am not anti-AI and we do not want to restrain AI, but we want to be truly prepared for the impact of AI on our lives," he said.
