Potential impacts of Chumphon-Ranong Land Bridge to be discussed during NEAC meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The potential impacts of the proposed development of the Chumphon-Ranong Land Bridge (CRLB) will be discussed during the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) meeting.

In a parliamentary written reply published on parliament's website yesterday, the Economy Ministry, however, did not specify the date of the meeting.

"The government is closely monitoring the developments regarding Thailand's proposal for CRLB, as an alternative maritime cargo route to the Straits of Malacca.

"In this regard, the government has conducted a study on the proposed development of the CRLB and its potential impact on the nation.

"It will be discussed in the NEAC meeting for the next course.

"The government is committed to ensuring Malaysia remains competitive, especially by accelerating the transition towards a high-value economy and strengthening its investment environment, subsequently enhancing the competitiveness of existing ports," the ministry said, in reply to a question from William Leong (PH-Selayang).

Leong asked about the government's stance on Thailand's proposal to build a canal within their country that may limit Malaysia's potential as a global trade transit hub.

In November last year, Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pitched the proposed 1 trillion baht land bridge project to investors in the United States, promoting the shipping route shortcut as a "cheaper, faster, and safer" alternative to Straits of Melaka.

Srettha, who is also the finance minister, was in San Francisco for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting and Related Meetings and attended the "Thailand Land Bridge Roadshow" to attract investors to the mega project, as the Thai government worked to spur investments and stimulate economic growth.
