Daim's lawyers call out Anwar's remarks on MACC investigations

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyers representing Tun Daim Zainuddin have rebuked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for questioning the opposition's silence regarding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigations into certain high-profile individuals.

Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh, the lawyers, asserted that Anwar's remarks were " clearly about the ongoing court proceedings and MACC probe on Daim ".

"Why does Anwar need to call for the opposition and others to support the MACC's actions? There is a legal process properly set out under the MACC Act which governs investigations. "This process doesn't include any role for the prime minister to carry out rabble-rousing against persons being investigated," they said in a statement.

They added that MACC's investigations must be carried out "free from outside pressures or influence". Last Jan 29, the former finance minister was charged in the Sessions Court here with failing to comply with a notice to declare his assets, which include several luxury vehicles, companies and properties in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Kedah.

Earlier, on Jan 23, Na'imah was charged in the same Sessions Court with failing to comply with a notice by not declaring her property including Menara Ilham and several properties around Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
