UNHCR can visit immigration depots, but rules must be followed, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reiterated his commitment to allow United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officers to visit detainees held at Immigration depots.

Saifuddin said this was in line with the government's efforts to uphold human rights.

He said this in response to a report that UNHCR has yet to receive any official confirmation that it would be given access to immigration depots.

In the report, UNHCR said this contradicted Saifuddin's remarks last month that the ministry had no issues about granting the body access to visit refugees in detention.

"I met UNHCR officials in the United States last year where we discussed the matter. During the meeting, we also agreed on several resolutions.

"If they need to conduct a visit to see what is happening inside the Immigration depot, we are open to it.

"However, there are processes and regulations that must be followed," he said, adding the ministry has good ties with UNHCR.
