Sabah single mothers struggle amid rising living costs

KOTA KINABALU: The current higher cost of living has definitely put vulnerable groups, including single mothers, in an increasingly precarious situation.

Sabah Single Mothers Association (PITSA) president Norhanida Annol said the association has about 2,500 single mothers from 15 districts in the state.

She added that most of them are from the bottom 40 (B40) income group, some might be even in worse economic situations.

"Of course, they have to bear the financial burden of looking after their young and schooling children. They will usually have at least two or more children.

"With the economic situation, it is indeed very challenging, as it is already difficult for them to support daily living costs, what more for schooling expenses and necessities at home.

"However, do not depend solely on assistance; as long as there is capability, health, and effort, we can stand on our own two feet," she said during an event 'Empowering Women for Single Mothers' in conjunction with International Women's Day yesterday at Sabah International Convention Centre here.

The event also saw 20 single mothers receive 100L ovens, 3L stand mixers, and ingredients starter kits from the Lions Clubs.

Norhanida added that there was a baking skills course organised for the recipients in December last year to empower them to earn income from the newly acquired skills.

The baking skills project is a collaboration between Regions 6 & 7 Lions Clubs and PITSA to support and uplift women from Kota Marudu, Bongawan, Kunak, and Penampang, among others.

The project's success is attributed to the generous personal contributions from friends of Lions and dedicated members.

Present were SICC chief executive officer Datuk Dr. Rosmawati Lasuki, Immediate Past District Governor District 308-A2 Kapitan Connie Loh Ming Hua, Kota Kinabalu Capital Lions Club president, and organising chairperson Regina Sulit.

Loh said: "Going beyond a mere provision of resources, the project, initiated in December 2023, has been a profound experience of skill-building and self-discovery for the participating women.

"Aligned with the core principles of Lions Clubs International, this initiative reflects an unwavering commitment to uplifting and empowering individuals, championing self-sufficiency, and preserving dignity."
