WAO hit by mass resignations, executive director suspended

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women's Aid Organisation has been hit by a slew of resignations after seven of its eight executive committee (exco) members resigned.

In a statement, WAO said the resignations of the seven excos were precipitated by the breakdown in their working relationship with the non-governmental organisation's executive director, Sumitra Visvanathan.

Only one exco, Tan Hei Zel, the WAO vice-president, did not resign.

WAO also said Sumitra has been suspended effective Feb 2, 2024.

It also said it has appointed an independent investigation panel, though it did not provide details of the issue that is being probed.

Following the resignations of the excos, WAO said it sought legal advice in accordance with its constitution.

Based on the legal advice it received, WAO co-opted six interim excos, namely Maria Erica Van Wynen, Divvyananthini Manoharan, Ivy Josiah, Meera Samanther, Majidah Hashim, and Shoba Aiyar.

Tan remains an exco member.

"The primary objective of the exco is to ensure the continuity of the organisation including meeting its obligations, provision of services, and the payment of salaries to its staff."

WAO said it has met the director of the Selangor Registrar of Societies on the matter.

"Since the constitution of the new exco, steps are being taken to raise much-needed funds, finalise financial statements for audit, and ensure that salaries are paid."

It also said it is working to convene an annual general meeting (AGM) as soon as possible.

"We have informed our members that the 41st Annual General Meeting is scheduled for April 28.

"A formal notice to convene the AGM will be issued at the appropriate time. The timing of the AGM aligns with the ongoing audit process."

WAO said in line with its constitution, it is required to present its audited accounts at the AGM.
