WAO denies claims it is being probed by RoS

New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) has denied its former head's claims that the formation of its current executive committee is illegal.

In a statement, the non-governmental organisation said the formation of its executive committee complied with all regulatory and statutory requirements, and that it was registered under the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

"We would also like to clarify that the RoS is not investigating WAO. The assertion made in this regard is incorrect," said WAO's executive committee.

It was responding to claims made by its former executive director Sumitra Visvanathan as reported by Malay Mail.

Meanwhile, WAO said it will hold an annual general meeting (AGM) on April 28.

"All members have been duly informed and invited to participate in the upcoming AGM," it said, adding it has appointed Nazreen Nizam as acting executive director.

It was previously reported that WAO was rocked by a slew of resignations after seven of its eight executive committee members resigned.

Then, WAO said the resignations of the seven excos were precipitated by the breakdown in their working relationship with Sumitra.

WAO also said then that Sumitra had been suspended from Feb 2, 2024, and that it co-opted six interim executive committee members.
