LOCATED within the Nakawan Range and managed by the Perlis Forestry Department since 1997, Gua Kelam is a prime example of nature's marvel and human history intertwined.
Spanning 2000 hectares in the Wang Mu Forest Reserve, this limestone cave near the town of Kaki Bukit, merely 500 metres away, offers a journey back in time and an adventure into the dark.
A TUNNEL THROUGH TIME
Gua Kelam, which translates to "Dark Cave," earned its name from the tin miners who once traversed its depths using carbide lamps to pierce the enveloping darkness.
The cave was the site of tin mining operations in the mid-20th century, leaving behind remnants of its industrious past.
Visitors can walk the 1.5-kilometre interpretive trail, which includes cement pathways, earthen tracks, and small stream crossings, illuminating the cave's historical significance.
THE MINER'S LEGACY
What makes Gua Kelam uniquely captivating are the traces of its mining heritage.
The path is lined with the original rail tracks laid down for ore trolleys, constructed from iron and wood and the stone pathways arranged by the miners.
The entrance gate, built by mine owners to mark their concession territories, still stands as a silent witness to the bustling activities that once took place.
WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS
Despite its dark history, Gua Kelam is alive with a diverse array of cave-dwelling creatures. Bats, snakes, spiders, and various insects have made their home in the cave, coexisting within this secluded ecosystem.
The presence of such wildlife adds an element of excitement and discovery for those venturing into the cave.

For a minimal entrance fee, adventurers and history enthusiasts alike can explore this unique cave system. Adults are charged a mere RM1.00, while children under 12 can enter for RM0.50, making it an affordable excursion for all.
Located approximately 33 km north of Kangar, the capital of Perlis, near the quaint town of Kaki Bukit, Gua Kelam is accessible and offers a glimpse into Malaysia's natural and historical richness.
With operational hours from 9 am to 6 pm, it provides ample time for visitors to immerse themselves in the enchanting atmosphere of Gua Kelam.
