Three assets in Palestine destroyed, Muslim Care Malaysia loses RM7.5 million

KUALA LUMPUR: Three assets fully owned by Muslim Care Malaysia (MCM) in Palestine have been completely destroyed in the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict.

MCM president Zulkifli Wahijan said another asset jointly owned with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) was also destroyed in the Israeli military offensive.

He said the three destroyed assets were the Muhammad al-Amin Mosque and Enaya Physiotherapy Center in Khan Younis and a space at the Rafah Immigration Complex, all estimated to be worth RM7.5 million.

He said part of the Palestinian Endowment Complex in downtown Gaza was affected by bombing, but its basic structure remained intact.

The Muhammad al-Amin Mosque, completed in 2013, was bombed on the second day of the military campaign. This was followed by the destruction of the space at the Rafah Immigration Complex two weeks later.

The next victim was the Enaya Physiotherapy Center, followed by some commercial building structures.

At the MCM Ramadan Iftar event last night, Zulkifli said MCM would not repair the assets for now and was thankful the basic structure of the buildings remained intact.

Present at the event was former minister in the Prime Minister's Department and MCM adviser Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

At the event, MCM launched a donation fund with a target of RM5 million to help the people of Palestine, Syria and Yemen who are facing turmoil.

Tens of thousands of people have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced in Gaza.

Zulkifli said about RM3 million collected between October and March have been spent on distributing food to the people of Gaza.

He said MCM Palestine chairman Ahmed Abu Ayesh Annajar and his team would cook and distribute food to 2,500 people daily, thanks to the contributions of Malaysians.

"The war situation has had emotional and physical effects on MCM volunteers in Gaza, including Abu Ayesh. We've lost contact with Abu Ayesh many times due to the unstable internet coverage there," Zulkifli said.

"In his messages in the past month, Abu Ayesh keeps talking about his imminent death. He often asks for prayers and forgiveness and leaves instructions for us to carry out if anything happens to him."

Abu Ayesh has narrowly escaped death twice. His house was destroyed in a bombing and many of his siblings and relatives were martyred.

Although Abu Ayesh was injured in the bombing, he continued to carry out his duties.
