Kedah Muslims flock to Masjid Zahir to embrace the first of Ramadan

ALOR STAR: Kedahans from all corners of the state gathered at the historic Masjid Zahir to observe the first iftar of Ramadan.

Checks around the century-old mosque this evening found patrons laying out picnic mats to prepare for iftar in front of the structure, celebrated as one of the world's most beautiful mosques. Syafiq Suib, a 32-year-old technician, said he drove from Changlun with his wife to break their fast amidst the festive ambiance of the mosque's grounds.

He expressed appreciation for the communal spirit prevalent during iftar, encapsulating the essence of Ramadan's blessings."Despite it being a bit warm today, visiting here is very worth it. Alhamdulillah, you can feel the blessings of Ramadan, especially when it's crowded.

"After my iftar, my wife and I can pray at the mosque. It's always special to pray at such a beautiful place, it's very comfortable too," he said when met today. Syafiq said that the mosque's courtyard is very well-maintained, highlighting its appeal as a prime spot for both sightseeing and photography enthusiasts.

Mohamad Affendi Ahmad, 41, traveled with his wife and six children from Sungai Petani to enjoy their iftar meal at the mosque's courtyard.Affendi, a government servant, said that every Ramadan, he visits the mosque weekly as a recreational activity for his family.

"I'll return next week, it's a great tourist spot for locals and foreigners. Before iftar, I shopped in nearby malls, and afterward, I can pray taraweeh here," he said. Meanwhile, in a gesture reflecting the essence of Ramadan, the management of Masjid Zahir extended hospitality to droves of patrons, offering iftar meals and drinks.

Grand Imam Sheikh Mohd Naim Ahmad said that the state's official mosque has also lined up various religious activities throughout the month."Alhamdulillah, on the eve of the first of Ramadan, we have already had a good start with over a thousand coming here to pray taraweeh.

"We expect the momentum to continue throughout the month as we have prepared a great line up of events to attract more to the mosque," he added. State Tourism, Culture and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin said the state government is committed to ensure that Masjid Zahir maintains its status as a prime tourist attraction.

"The state government is also committed to preserving the uniqueness of Masjid Zahir as one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. This mosque plays a major role with our Visit Kedah 2025 campaign," he added.Meanwhile, Salleh advised everyone visiting the mosque premises to maintain it's cleanliness.

"Lets keep it clean, it would enhance the image and status of our state in the eyes of the public. I also wish all Muslims a blessed Ramadan," he added.
