Dry spell in Papar affects 40 villages, schools and religious institutions

PAPAR: Forty villages, seven housing areas and schools, as well as three religious institutions involving 150,000 people are affected by the dry spell here.

District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Fuad Abdullah said there are several departments and agencies involved in delivering water supply for the people using 18 lorries with different capacities.

Among them are the Sabah Water department, Sabah Public Works, Sabah Fire and Rescue department, Papar district council, the state constituencies and parliament.

Meanwhile, he said that the district Fire and Rescue department has reported a bush fire today at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sekayan, Pengalat Besar near here.

At 12.07pm, the fire involved an area of about two acres. The station also recorded nine wildfires this week since March 9.

"For the fire prevention aspect, Sabah Information department at the district will conduct Info On Wheels (IOW) at Kg Berundong, Kg Bambangan and Kg Beringgis."

As for the agriculture sector, Mohd Fuad said 93 rice farmers were affected by the dry spell.

Their rice farming areas are 54.68 hectares at Limbahau and 30.22 hectares at Biau Padawan.

Earlier, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan had said that he would hold a meeting with the state Water council to look into recommendations to address the situation.
