Zaid slams Umno Youth over 'unreasonable' apology demands to KK Super Mart [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has hit out at Umno Youth over its demands against KK Super Mart on the sale of socks bearing the word 'Allah'.

Iin a posting on X (formerly Twitter), Zaid described the statement made by Umno Youth chief Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh who warned of drastic action if the demands of the wing are not met as a "bullying and humiliating tactic" and not much an attempt to pursue an apology.

"Look at the demands of Umno Youth to KK (Super) Mart to strengthen their apology. How does one make a stronger apology?

"The owner of the convenience stores has explained the incident over the stocking issue. His explanation appears reasonable to me.

"What gains or motives would a supermarket chain have to use the word Allah deliberately on a small part of its stock? It makes no sense that the store wants to humiliate Muslims. Probably, it was done by a mischievous supplier without KK (Super) Mart knowing," he said.

Umno Youth, said Zaid, should investigate and think through the matter.

He added that the wing should also be responsible when dealing with sensitive matters or errors made by the Chinese business community.

"If there are no KK (Super) Mart in the world, will Umno Youth be able to start up similar stores to serve the people?"

Earlier today, it was reported that Umno Youth gave the management of KK Super Mart a period of two days to put-up a banner at all of its 881 branches nationwide to apologise for the sale of socks.

The wing, said Dr Akmal, would initiate a "stronger boycott" against KK Super Mart in the event the management of the convenience store failed to submit to its demands.

"A banner apologising for the incident must be mounted at each of your 881 branches around the country.

"I will instruct Umno leaders to go to the ground and check if all the branches of the convenience store has put-up the banner or otherwise," he said.
