'Hans Isaac should resign as Malaysian Stadium Corporation chairman'

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition members of parliament have urged Malaysian Stadium Corporation chairman Datuk Hans Isaac to resign over alleged failure to manage grass maintenance at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Perikatan Nasional's Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal also questioned if Isaac was ever fit for the role.

"He knows he was just a political appointee, because he has ties with PKR. Maybe even (Youth and Sports) Minister (Hannah Yeoh) doesn't like him. But since the prime minister is from PKR, what can be done?"

Harimau Malaya is taking on Oman in the World Cup Group D qualifier in Bukit Jalil tonight.

Neither Malaysia nor Oman were allowed to train in the stadium due to the "poor" condition of its pitch.

The poor pitch condition had also caught the attention of Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who was reported to have "sponsored" the zeon zoysia pitch worth RM1.4 million.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, who is Machang MP, said the call for Isaac's resignation was not about Harimau Malaya winning or losing tonight's game.

"He (Isaac) has not done a good job for the country. He did not manage our assets well, our stadium, impacting our football team, our people and our tax money.

"Heads must roll. Enough is enough, Isaac. If he has humility, he should resign," he added.

Alor Star MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the Malaysian Stadium Corporation board should be shuffled and include experts, instead of actors.

"Such problems have occurred three times. Our team cannot play at its best (due to the poor condition).

"This incident brings embarrassment to our country. It is an international sporting event and we are the host, but we cannot provide an international-standard stadium."
