Results for toxicity in shellfish off PD out tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The results of tests on mussels found off Port Dickson for any presence of harmful algae will be known tomorrow, says the Fisheries Department.

The laboratory analysis was done in the wake of food poisoning cases in the Negri Sembilan resort town since Monday.

Eight people were treated for food poisoning believed to have been caused by eating mussels bought from two markets in Port Dickson.

Of the eight, two were placed in the intensive care unit due more severe symptoms including paralysis.

The department said in a statement that preliminary measures included a temporary ban on the sale and harvesting of mussels, whether through the floating or stake systems.

It said the department did scheduled inspections under the National Shellfish Sanitation Programme, which involved sampling of both farmed and wild shellfish.

"The public is urged to report to the nearest State/District Fisheries Department if they observe suspicious changes in the colour of seawater," it said.
