Esscom plans 'Friends of Sabah' app to enhance tourists' safety

KOTA KINABALU: The "Friends of Sabah" mobile app could play a role in enhancing tourist safety along the state's east coast.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) commander Datuk Victor Sanjos said the app, which would be developed under Esscom, could facilitate tourists' action in times of emergency.

"When needed, users can initiate an SOS call directly from the app to Esscom's operating centre, as well as to other emergency response teams, that is the Fire and Rescue Department, hospital and police.

"By using the 'Friends of Sabah' app, Esscom will be informed of their presence in the area," he said.

Victor was attending an engagement session with tourism stakeholders organised by the Sabah Tourism Board at a hotel here yesterday.

In response to a request from tourism players to change the word "curfew", he said the Sabah Sea curfew had been renamed to the Esszone Movement Control Order since Oct 17 last year.

Present were state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew and her assistant minister, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

Liew expressed gratitude for the assurance provided by security forces regarding safety in Sabah, noting that it will enhance international travelers' confidence and strengthen the confidence of current and potential investors.

She agreed with Victor's suggestion that industry players should play their role in communicating the level of safety and security to their international clients or guests.

She added that while the opportunity to welcome visitors to Sabah was almost limitless, there was a need to maintain a careful balance of business acumen.

"Do care for our environment, and most importantly, ensure we adopt best practices and standards of operations for the common good."
