Kadazandusun association thankful for RM1 million allocation to preserve cultural heritage

PENAMPANG: The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) is thankful for the RM1 million allocation from the government.

Its president, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, said the contribution was crucial to cultural heritage preservation and development.

"I must express our deepest gratitude to those who have this possible.

"We owe our thanks to the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for approving the allocation of RM1 million from the federal government," he said at a press conference on the upcoming grand opening of Hongkod Avenue stalls at Hongkod Koisaan here on April 13.

During the state-level Pesta Kaamatan, or harvest festival, here on May 31 last year, Anwar had announced the allocation for KDCA to organise its activities.

Pairin, who is also Huguan Siou or paramount leader of the Kadazandusun Murut community, said the association used the funds for the Hongkod Avenue that comprised 22 food and 12 craft stalls.

He added that through the avenue, KDCA aimed to generate income to finance various activities and provide a platform for members to engage in entrepreneurship and uplift their economic status.

It will also create opportunities for communities to showcase their traditional food, crafts and agricultural products.

"The opening of these stalls at Hongkod Avenue KDCA, marks a milestone, in time for the upcoming Pesta Kaamatan in May.

"This lively street will offer a fresh 'shopping experience' for locals and tourists. With a variety of delicious food and handmade crafts, Hongkod Avenue will be a great place to enjoy explore local cultures.

"We're starting a journey to make Hongkod Koisaan a lively place where everyone can come together.

"It's not just about physical (building) upgrades but it's about making Hongkod Koisaan a place where families and friends can come together to enjoy the food, share laughter and create space for our traditions."
