Dewan Rakyat Speaker denies discussions with Egyptian Ambassador on Rafah-Gaza crossing

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has denied the recent allegations suggesting that there have been discussions with the Ambassador of Egypt to Malaysia regarding the Rafah-Gaza Crossing.

In a statement, he said there has been no such discussion or engagement whatsoever that was made regarding the matter.

"I intended the statement to be that while the Egyptian side of the border is open to receive aid, the other side remains to be eased.

"I hope this clarifies any misconceptions or misunderstandings surrounding this matter," he said.

It was reported last Thursday that he has communicated Malaysia's request to the Egyptian government, asking them to consider opening their borders to facilitate the delivery of food and medical assistance to the Palestinian people.

Johari conveyed the request to the Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia, Ragai Tawfik Said Nasr, who was present at the open house hosted by the Speaker at his official residence on April 11.

The New Straits Times has reached out to the Egyptian Ambassador Ragai Tawfik Said Nasr for comment.
