Govt to monitor impact of Middle East conflict on Malaysia's markets

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is closely monitoring the developments and the position of financial markets, including the potential impact on Malaysia, following the current situation in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this in a statement following a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, along with senior government officials to discuss the current situation in the Middle East region.

"As such, the government will act wisely to strengthen the country's economic and financial stability as well as any factors that may affect the Malaysian people."

He also said the attack launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran is a retaliatory response stemming from the heinous attack by Zionist Israel on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, recently.

"This is undoubtedly a clear violation of international law.

"Malaysia stands firm in the belief that all parties must play a role in ensuring that tensions in the Middle East do not escalate further for the sake of global interests and security, and all parties must strive to achieve a resolution by ending conflicts in the region."

He added that the chosen path to resolution will not be sustainable if the violence currently occurring is not ended immediately.

He also affirmed Malaysia's stance to stand with the Palestinian people who continue to suffer from the crisis.

"Now is the time for all parties to play a role in urging for an end to tensions," he said.

On Saturday, Iran launched drones and missiles towards military sites on Israeli territory in response to an Apr 1 attack by Israel on Iran's consulate in Damascus, Syria.

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday over Iran's unprecedented drone and missile attack on Israel.

Earlier, Wisma Putra warned Malaysians in the Middle East of potential flight cancellations due to tensions between Iran and Israel and the closing of airspace.

It also said the safety of Malaysians residing in these four countries would remain a priority and in any case of an emergency, they were to contact the respective embassies in the area.

It also advised Malaysians affected to keep themselves updated with the latest announcements and to follow instructions from local authorities at all times.
