Kg Datu to be redeveloped into Sarawak's largest traditional village

SIBU: Kampung Datu is poised for a transformative redevelopment to become the largest traditional village in Sarawak, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

While announcing the project, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that while the village would retain its historical essence, significant modern enhancements are planned.

"We will modernise the village but preserve the cultural features that reflect the heritage of Kampung Datu.

"This includes creating a boulevard from Masjid An-Nur to the riverbank, alongside the development of modern homes and facilities. If Darul Hana can be developed, so can Kampung Datu," he said during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Gathering at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak in Sibu.

Further developments will include beautifying the Igan riverbank to add attractive features, coupled with the construction of a convention centre.

"This project will not only enhance the local infrastructure but also connect the village with Kemuyang via a new 15km road, linking from Kemuyang to Teku, then to UTS, and onwards to Kampung Datu. Essentially, expanding Kampung Datu towards Kemuyang," he said.

The redevelopment aims to foster unity, understanding, mutual respect, and strengthen community bonds among the original residents of Kampung Datu. Additionally, it will serve as a liaison between the villagers and various governmental, private, and development bodies concerning community issues.
