Motorcyclist killed in collision with reversing lorry near Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with an unattended lorry that rolled backward on Jalan Lencong Timur here today.

The driver of the lorry, who has a history of six previous accident cases, has been detained by the police in connection with the 2pm incident.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said checks showed the 46-year-old lorry driver had left his vehicle unattended on the roadside, and it unexpectedly began rolling backward.

He said the victim, identified as Ooi Oung Teik, 54, was travelling from Taman Sejati Indah towards his home in Bandar Puteri Jaya when the collision occurred.

"Upon reaching the scene, the motorcyclist crashed into the lorry as it was rolling backward.

"The impact threw the victim off his machine and he succumbed to his injuries on the spot," he said in a statement.

Azharuddin said initial investigations point to negligence on the part of the lorry driver for leaving the vehicle unattended. The lorry has also been impounded for thorough inspection.

The case, he added, was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
