14-year old dies after collapsing during school cross country activity

KUALA PILAH: A secondary school student died after collapsing during a cross-country activity this morning.

In the 9.30am incident, the 14-year-old student was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead two hours later. It is learnt that the student had been suffering from heart disease since 2016.

Kuala Pilah district deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Syahrul Anuar Abdul Wahab said the teenager participated in the activity organised by his school at Jalan Kampung Gentam, Taman Fatimah, at 8am, along with 700 other students.

"The activity included a 7km run and suddenly at about 9.30am when he was almost reaching the finish line, he collapsed and lost consciousness.

"A teacher at the scene was said to have given him first aid but the teenager did not respond. They then called for help via 999," he said when contacted, today.

He said paramedics provided first aid at the scene before he was taken to the Emergency Department at Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital here.

"The ambulance arrived at the Emergency Unit at 10.15am and tried to revive the victim for about two hours before they pronounced him dead."

He added that based on the victim's father's statement, the victim suffered from heart disease since 2016 and was on medication from the National Heart Institute for his condition.

"Currently, the case is classified as sudden death (SDR) however investigations are still underway," he said.
