With less demand in tailoring , Paksu Mie makes ends meet as 'teh tarik' performer

KOTA BARU: Rahim Yusoff, who was born without hands, had been making a living as a tailor for almost 30 years.

However, his income slightly dropped since last year as he received few orders from his clients even during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Rahim claimed that his clients now prefered to buy clothes online.

This, the 57-year-old man said prompted him to find another job to get some pocket money.

"Nowadays, people choose to buy ready made clothes through TikTok and other sellers online.

"I am lucky that I have a little bit of skill in making 'teh tarik'. So, I have used the talent to perform 'teh tarik' shows at many events in the state.

"I do not mind people looking down on me as long as I can get money from the show," said Rahim who is from Pulai Chondong, Machang.

Fondly known locally as `Paksu Mie', the father of three children aged four to 14, said he would perform the show at various events including one which was held last week.

"Last week, I took part in the 'teh tarik' contest organised by the state government at its Hari Raya open house.

"I know that I could not beat other participants as I only use my two normal legs and feet to 'pull' the tea but for me, it is okay as long as I get the payment for taking part in the show," he said.

Those who meet Rahim for the first time would notice that he only has three fingers attached to his shoulders. He does not let his disability get in the way of him making ends meet for the sake of his family.

Apart from supporting his children, Rahim also needs to take care of his semi-paralysed wife Noraidah Hamzah, 49.

Rahim claimed that he would receive at least three invitations in a month for shows.
