Perak sultan graces UM Excellence Award ceremony

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah today graced the 2023 Universiti Malaya (UM) Excellence Award ceremony, which honours excellent staff members and corporate bodies associated with the university.

Sultan Nazrin, who is deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong and UM chancellor, presented 10 awards at the ceremony.

The ceremony involved 41 categories, spanning course subjects, research, administration, and corporate partners, presented to 63 recipients.

Present were UM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman and pro-chancellors Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong and Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib.

Noor Azuan, in a speech, said the ceremony, now in its 12th year, is an annual award aimed at recognising UM's outstanding staff and its corporate bodies for their contributions to the university.

"Without their dedication and hard work, the achievements and excellence we witness today would not have been possible. Therefore, let us honour and recognise them at this ceremony," he said.

"In this transformation, UM remains steadfast in its belief and courage to enact strategic changes and transformations to reach and shape new benchmarks, including upholding the country's norms and values in line with UM's new tagline 'Home of the Bright, Land of the Brave' (Di Sini Bermulanya Pintar, Tanah Tumpahnya Berani).

"Following this, UM will continue to serve as the model for society and the nation by providing a ray of hope and guidance to the government and the nation, while fostering new aspirations for the development of the country and Malaysian society."

The highest award category, with a reward of RM 10,000, was the Innovative Academic Programme, aimed at recognising programmes that emphasise innovative and creative curriculum design, leading to the development of resilient and future-ready graduates.

Other award categories were the Innovative Alternative Assessment, Excellent Teaching, Best Academic Administrator, Outstanding Young Researcher, Research Figure, Corporate Partner and Excellent Partner.
