Lumut helicopter crash: Both aircraft likely to have flight recorders

IPOH: The helicopters which crashed yesterday in Lumut are likely to have flight recording devices.

Analysis of the flight data will provide valuable insight into the cause of the accident.

"Aircraft the size of the AW139 will have a recording device. A civilian Fennec is also required to have one," said Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud.

However, the military would have its own requirements for the helicopter, he added.

The AW139 Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM), one of two helicopters that crashed at the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Lumut base today, was a new aircraft procured in 2021.

A flight recorder was recently retrieved from a similar aircraft operated by another government agency.

Last week it was reported that the black box of a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) AW139 helicopter (M72-01), which made an emergency landing during a rescue exercise on March 5 near the waters of Pulau Angsa, Kuala Selangor, was found.
