Fahmi disappointed, UM faces backlash for inviting Zionist to give talk

PUTRAJAYA: Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his disappointment with the Universiti Malaya (UM) for inviting a foreign speaker who made controversial remarks and disrespected public sentiments, especially Malaysia's effort to help Palestinians.

The unity government spokesman said he was upset with UM's decision to invite a foreign academic who is inclined towards the Zionist regime.

"A professor attended, made derogatory comments, and upon examining his academic background, he is pro-Zionist.

"I am disappointed with this invitation," he said while delivering his address at the Communication Ministry's monthly assembly here today.

Fahmi, who is Lembah Pantai member of parliament, said such incidents should not happen at UM because the university is an institute of higher education and a place of study for many of the country's top leaders.

"UM is also an institution located in (my) constituency (Lembah Pantai) and as a member of parliament for this area, I feel disappointed.

"Incidents like this should not happen because UM is the alma mater or the premier educational institution for prime ministers, several former prime ministers, former speakers, attorneys-general, chief justices and many more.

"We know the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has spoken out strongly on the Palestinian issue," said Fahmi.

Earlier, the media reported that UM received much criticism for allowing political science professor, Bruce Gilley, to spread Zionist propaganda and accuse Malaysian politicians who support the Palestinian struggle of spreading hatred against the Jews.- BERNAMA
