Azam Baki confirms MACC probe against Dr Mahathir [NSTTV]

GUA MUSANG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the subject of a graft investigation.

Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said Dr Mahathir is being probed together with two of his sons, businessmen Tan Sri Mohkzani and Mirzan.

"I wish to confirm that he (Dr Mahathir) is among those being investigated. This follows an investigation on two of his sons.

"His two sons were issued with notices to declare their assets within the period specified under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009," he said.

Azam, however, did not provide details on the alleged offences.

"I cannot give any details on the offences. Let the investigations conclude first, and we will elaborate at an appropriate time," he said.

In January, MACC served Mirzan a notice to declare his assets, inside or outside the country, within 30 days. The commission said the notice was issued in relation to the "revelations" obtained from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers.

Mokhzani, meanwhile, was later investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

Mokhzani and Mirzan, quoted by Bloomberg, had claimed that their father was the target of the MACC probe. They claimed they were ordered to assist in a probe into Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir, meanwhile, had questioned MACC for going 'through his son' instead of relaying any accusations of graft directly to him. He said he was prepared to be investigated in any way.
