Abang Jo announces biomass conversion for Sejingkat and Balingian power plants

KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg recently declared the state's commitment to 100 per cent green energy generation, shifting away from environmentally harmful materials, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

During the International Water Day National Level celebration at the Kuching Waterfront, he revealed plans for Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to transition two of its coal-fired plants at Sejingkat and Balingian into biomass power plants.

This initiative draws inspiration from the Drax Power Plant in the UK, which the Premier visited, emphasising the conversion's minimal investment due to similar system requirements.

With the conversion, the Sejingkat plant's current 210-megawatt output and the 270 and 624 megawatts from the Mukah and Balingian plants respectively are expected to maintain or potentially increase their capacity.

This approach is poised to strengthen Sarawak's commitment to sustainable energy production.
