CYBERJAYA: The Medical Device Authority (MDA) has seized about RM700,000 worth of unlabeled contact lenses and various unregistered devices from a premises at a shopping mall in the federal capital on Monday.
The same premises was previously raided and stripped of its business licence for selling unregistered contact lenses and cleaning solutions, making this a repeat offence.
MDA chief executive Dr Muralitharan Paramasua said the operation on Monday followed a public complaint and involved 19 MDA enforcement officers.
MDA seized 101,186 unlabeled contact lenses and 42, 098 various unregistered devices from the same premises in a capital city shopping mall.
"The raid uncovered the distribution of unregistered contact lenses by the company, which we had previously targeted in November last year along with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
"Despite having their licence revoked, they persisted in their illegal activities," he told a press conference today.
It also seized 276 branded label stickers and 25 related documents for further investigation.
Initial findings indicate the contact lenses were imported from Korea but were not registered under the MDA and sold at a low price of RM9 to RM10 per pair.
Dr Muralitharan said the company used registered devices as a front to sell unregistered lenses.
"They were also selling these products online and through agents, whom we are currently tracking down for further investigation," he added.
Dr Muralitharan said the company's committed an offence under Section 25 of the Medical Device Act (Act 737), which prohibits placing medical devices on the market without proper registration. Those convicted could be fined up to RM200,000 and jailed three years, or both.
"We remind all parties that selling unregistered medical devices is illegal and poses serious health risks to users, including potential blindness from unregistered contact lenses," he said.
