Frustrated motorcyclist claims Penang Bridge closed early ahead of Police Run 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: A frustrated motorcyclist's rant following the early road closure at Penang Bridge ahead of the Police Run 2023 has gone viral since yesterday.

In the short video posted by a ManShariffBhai on TikTok, the motorcyclist claimed he was trying to get home ahead of the road closure scheduled at 12am, but found the roads closed at 11.30pm.

The man claimed the closure announcement said it would start at midnight but the authorities chose to close the road earlier, causing unnecessary inconvenience to motorists headed back and from the island.

"The announcement posters read that the road closure on the Penang Bridge starts at 12am but when we come here at 11.30pm, the road is already closed. Same applies to the Simpang Gelugor to USM road, the road towards the roundabout as well as the Batu Uban road have all been closed ahead of schedule.

"When I tried asking the policeman standing guard at the closure, he told me it was an order from his superior.

When I asked the superior, he also gave me the same answer," he is heard saying in the short video.

He said the premature closure caused many road users inconvenience.

The man also goes on to record a video of the traffic congestion along both directions, allegedly caused by the unannounced decision to cordon off the road earlier.

This video posted last night has received over 13,000 likes and 1,100 comments.

Among the comments were from @MFS:" I was returning home from Queensbay to Desa Putra and experienced the same problem.

When I asked the Rela personnel on duty for an alternative route, he tells me he's not from there and wasn't familiar with the roads."

@Haqita Lunia: Be patient. The event is only once a year. Moreover they closed early so that they can clear the traffic on the bridge for the annual police run.

@MamiAnnisa: Laaa.. we also used the second bridge to get home last night. At 11pm itself, we saw the jam building up and used the second bridge to avoid traffic.
