Penang Bridge fatal crash: Police await chemist report

GEORGE TOWN: Police are awaiting the chemist report to complete the investigation paper (IP) into the fatal crash involving a teen driver which claimed two lives on the Penang Bridge last Saturday.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Cheng San said, thereafter, the IP would be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further action.

"We are awaiting the chemist report for the blood sample of the 16-year-old driver to determine if he was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol to complete the IP.

"As of now, we have recorded statements from several witnesses and those involved in the crash.

"In fact, we have also obtained the 'dashcam' recording from other drivers who were there during the incident," he said.

The case is probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

It was reported that a motorcyclist and his female pillion rider died in a fatal crash with a car, which was driven by the teen, at Km1.9 of the Penang Bridge on Saturday.

The 2.30am incident involved three vehicles — a motorcycle, a car and a lorry.

The motorcyclist and his pillion rider, in their early 20s, died at the scene due to severe injuries.

The pair are believed to be on their way home after having a meal at Bayan Lepas.

The teen driver sustained minor injuries while the lorry driver escaped unhurt.

Initial investigation revealed the crash happened when the car heading towards the mainland from the island, is believed to have rear-ended a lorry, causing it to lose control.

The car then crashed into the motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist and the pillion rider to be thrown off the machine and succumb to their injuries at the scene.

The teen driver, who is driving without a licence and still in school, is believed to have driven his mother's car. He was returning home in Bukit Mertajam after meeting a friend on the island.

Police have since issued a summons against the teen's mother for allowing him to drive the car without licence.
