#NSTviral: Strangers come together to help elderly can collector in heartwarming encounter [Watch]

KUALA LUMPUR: A heartwarming moment captured on camera by a visiting American YouTuber has touched the hearts of Malaysians online.

Max McFarlin, a travel and food content creator with over 1.18 million subscribers on YouTube (@dailymax24), documented his experience exploring Kuala Lumpur in a recent video. One particular scene, however, has garnered significant attention.

While strolling through Kampung Baru, McFarlin witnessed an elderly man struggling to collect cans which had spilled all over the road after his bag ripped open.

The video snippet, which appears around the halfway mark of his full YouTube video, shows McFarlin crossing the road to help the man pick up the cans. As he did, more people came to help.

They assisted by pushing the scattered cans to the roadside before picking them up one by one.

Towards the end of the video, at least six other individuals can be seen joining in the effort.

The video captured a moment of unity as people from all walks of life came together to help the man gather the cans and place them back in his bag.

In a message following the encounter, McFarlin said that the situation hit home for him as his father collected cans to sell them at scrap yards too.

Reflecting on the hard labour of a can collector and the meagre earnings from it, McFarlin said, "Seeing something unfortunate like that happen to him, you got to step out there, you got to help him."

Many in the comments section thanked him for his kindness.

One commenter, who was touched by the incident, wrote, "From a western tourist, to a corporate working lady, to abang/uncle grab or rider. Everyone came to help. Who put onions below my eyes?"

Another commenter said: "The fact that everyone helped that uncle restores my faith for this country yet again, no matter the turmoil, we need each other."
