#NSTviral: Malaysians hope more businesses will start renting out traditional clothes to boost tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Ladies who post pictures of themselves wearing rental kebaya Nyonya have gained the attention of the public, and this business could boost tourism.

Posting on social media platform X, user @psunster in the caption said: "People can dress up in kebaya and take a walk around the Melaka districts."

"It's quite nice to see a Nyonya (even a pretend one) stroll down Heeren St. again," she wrote.

The post, along with pictures of the two ladies wearing the traditional clothes, has been flooded with comments by netizens who said this rental business could be beneficial.

User @r4punzellll commented: "Malaysia has many types of traditional clothing. It would be beneficial if the rental of traditional clothes could be implemented in all states."

"Malaysia, especially Melaka, should start businesses like those in Korea and Japan, where people rent traditional attire to take pictures or even stroll around town. Let's make Malaysia great," said user @shannatooth.

Another user @bunkoodle said: "Oh my God! If Kuching does this too, renting Melanau, Iban, Malay (the traditional one with keringkam), Orang Ulu, and others' clothes and walking around the old museum area, it would be so amazing."

Some of them suggested places in other states where people could go to wear different types of traditional clothes.

"If you want to wear clothes like those of the Malay sultanate, go to the Sultanate Palace Museum in Melaka, next to A Famosa Fort. Here, it costs RM100. You can wear it around the palace and the photographer there can accompany you if you want them to take pictures using your own phone," said @prettylupins.

"In Penang, they have it, too! At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. They even offer a fully guided historical tour. It was so lovely to see all the intricate designs and antiques," wrote @aidanayla.

However, netizens suggest hiring influencers or doing more promotion to make it one of the tourist attractions because some of the initiatives might not go far without adequate promotion.
