Pujut by-election to proceed, unless Court decides otherwise

KUCHING: The Pujut by-election will proceed as scheduled, despite the suit filed by its former elected representative, Dr Ting Tiong Choon.

Dr Ting of DAP today had filed an originating summon at the High Court registry to declare his disqualification as the Pujut state assemblyman as null and void apart from an order to postpone the upcoming by-election for the state seat.

Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the by-election slated for nomination and polling on June 20 and July 4 will proceed as planned.

"The by-election for the Pujut state seat, which has been fixed on July 4 as stated in the writ of election, will proceed unless the EC receives a Court order to stop and postpone the by-election.

"Since the originating summon has been filed today, we leave it for the Court to decide," said Hashim in a statement today.

Dr Ting, 52, was disqualified as the Pujut state assembly following a ministerial motion moved against him for allegedly holding dual citizenship by the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly on May 12.
