Penang Wanita Umno deputy head Sopiah sworn in as senator

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang Wanita Umno deputy chief Sopiah Sharif was sworn in as senator at the Dewan Negara today.

Sopiah, 60, took her oath in front of Dewan Negara president Datuk S A Vigneswaran, who apprised her of her responsibilities as a senator and advised her to carry out her duties according to the Federal Constitution.

This is the first senatorial appointment for Sopiah, who begins her term today.

Sopiah said that as a senator and member of Wanita Umno, she will focus on issues surrounding women’s rights and affordable housing in Penang.

“I will execute my role as a senator and contribute to the country, especially the people of Penang. I would like to express my gratitude to Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Sharizat Abdul Jalil for her guidance in the party,” she said.

Prior to her senatorial appointment, Sopiah was deputy supervisor at the Welfare Department (Kemas) from 1990 to 2016.
