Working with Dr M: Kit Siang says time to focus on present, future

GEORGE TOWN: Veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang today brushed aside scepticism over his cooperation with his former nemesis Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Lim said despite all the reservations and questions in the past, what was more important now was the present and future.

"We must not forget the past...let us not ignore the past. But what is important is the present and the future.

"We must asked what can we do for the present and for the future.

"For the people, I think this is a time for awakening...a time for a decision to reclaim our country, so that we can ensure our children and our children's children future is assured of an honourable place under the Malaysian sun," he told newsmen.

He was asked on public scepticism over his cooperation with Dr Mahathir, and that many people still remembered the latter's previous scandals and things which he had not been able to answer.

Lim said the great turnout at the state Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Hari Raya open house last night was a clear indication of the support for Dr Mahathir, a former prime minister for 22 years.

"He (Dr Mahathir) has a very controversial personality but (he is a) strong leader," he added.

At yesterday's open house, Dr Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, publicly admitted that he had worked together with Lim to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said that he had set aside ill feelings for the DAP stalwart and worked with him, starting with the signing of the Deklarasi Rakyat.

"Everyone knows that Lim and I are not the best of friends. In fact, we are enemies.

"But we came together out of desperation during Deklarasi Rakyat to topple Najib." he had said to cheers from the crowd.
