GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno Youth today lodged a police report against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over an alleged slanderous remark he made on the arrest of state executive council member Phee Boon Poh.
Its chief Rafizal Abd Rahim said Lim's comment was "malicious" when he described the arrest made by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as "illegal".
"Moreover, his statement gave the wrong impression towards MACC as an anti-graft body, as if the commission has no respect for the law and can arrest anyone as it pleased.
"This is a slanderous statement aimed at damaging the reputation and credibility of the MACC as an independent investigative body," he said, after filing the report at the Northeast District police headquarters at Jalan Patani here today.
He urged the police to open an investigation paper on the matter and take action against Lim.
It was reported that MACC was mulling legal action against Lim for failing to apologise over the remark he allegedly made on Aug 24, when answering questions from newsmen concerning an illegal factory in Sungai Lembu.
MACC said it viewed seriously Lim's "illegal arrest by MACC" statement and considered it as defamation.
It has handed the decision to take action against Lim to Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali for further action under the provisions of the law.
