Ex-DAP member lodges police report over congress pandemonium

KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP member Tony Tan has urged the police to take action against a man who allegedly threatened him with violence and disrupted his protest during DAP’s special congress on Sunday.

In his police report lodged today, Tan said the man, who was clad in an orange t-shirt and driving an SUV, disrupted his demonstration at 9.30am outside the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.

“He did so by honking his horn and rushing at me in a scary and physically threatening way. At the same time, he called me a person who was bribed to run down the party.

“This was done with the purpose of picking a fight with me and to scare me off.”

Tan said this to reporters after lodging a report at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters here today.

He called on the police to take action against the man under Section 574 of the Penal Code for issuing criminal threats and Section 509 for using slurs that insulted his modesty.

“I receive an average of 2,000 hate texts on Whatsapp and Facebook from DAP members. This inadvertently puts my safety at risk,” he said, adding that photos of the texts were given to the police.

The fracas occurred at 9.30am on Sunday, minutes before 1,356 delegates were set to cast their ballots and re-elect the party's central executive committee (CEC).

Tan was seen holding up a banner and lashing out against several party leaders, including DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and vice-chairman Teresa Kok.

Tan was reportedly harassed and had profanities hurled at him when he started speaking out against the purported injustices committed against former DAP member Danny Lim and the late Teoh Beng Hock

During the protest, Tan, who claims to be Kok’s former personal assistant, had urged the DAP delegates not to vote corrupt leaders into the CEC.

He had also claimed that Kok, who is Seputeh member of parliament, had unfairly sued Lim, who died in 2014, for questioning a donation she received on behalf of the party.

Tan had also bemoaned the tragedy that befell Teoh, who died in custody while being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in 2009. --Reporting by VEENA BABULAL, NORAZILAH MOHD NOOR AND NORERDAWANI CHE AWANG
