Penang house fire tragedy: MCA to bear funeral cost of four victims

GEORGE TOWN: MCA will bear the full funeral cost for the four family members of Tanjung division Youth chief Lim Swee Bok, who were killed in a tragic fire here this morning.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Chong Sin Woon said this was decided by the party leadership this afternoon.

“We just want to assure (Lim) that there is nothing for him to worry about now,” he said when met at the Penang Hospital mortuary.

Chong said Lim is still waiting to claim the bodies of his mother, wife and two young children.

“However, as his wife is a foreigner, the hospital needs a letter from the Chinese Embassy before they release her body.

“We are working on that and hope to get it done by today,” he added.

Lim’s four family members perished in a blaze at their two storey house at Pintasan Cecil 5, Pengkalan Weld here at around 6am.

The deceased were Lim’s daughter, Lim Jia Yiin, 8; son, Lim Yin Chun, 9; Chinese wife, Chen Yen, 35; and mother, Lau Sai Poh, 62.

According to Penang MCA chief Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Lim was away at work when the incident occurred.

“He is a (full-time) engineer at a factory, and he was on the night shift,” Tan said.

It is learnt that Lim lost his father, after a long illness, just one week ago.
