MCA supports police call for public restraint on socks issue

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has voiced its support over the call by the police for the public to "stand down" on the "Allah" socks issue.

Its secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the case had been brought to court and that all quarters should let the law take its course.

"If we further continue to fan (the flames of the issue), it will only cause tension on the relations among the people.

"Right or wrong, let the court decide and make the judgement," he said when contacted.

Chong however reserved his comment when asked about the boycott campaign against KK Mart convenience store chain following reports of its outlet displaying the product in question.

Earlier, Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said all parties should stand down, urging everyone to stop playing up sensitive issues related to the 3R (race, religion, and royalty).

He said those involved in the KK Mart controversy had been charged and the public should let the justice system work.

KK Mart Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan and his company director and wife Datin Seri Loh Siew Mui, both pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court with intentionally wounding the religious feelings of Muslims by displaying socks bearing the word "Allah" at its Bandar Sunway outlet.

Chai, 57, and Loh, 53, were charged separately under Section 298 of the Penal Code.
